RGV NEW YEAR DAY 2011 DOG

Wow, what a way to kick off a New Year!

The Rio Grande Valley Chapter of the LSDOS held a Dog on New Years Day to kick off the new year.

We met at West Side Park in McAllen, Texas on 1-1-11. Don't ya love it? We decided to try a noon start time to allow those who celebrated the New Year, time to recoup and recover. Randy and Sylvia arrived around 11 am to secure a pavilion and get the coffee on. Well in reality it was just too pretty a day to stay inside any longer. Randy fired up a chimney of coals and put on a pot of coffee. Just about the time the coffee started to perc, Homer showed up and quickly started on a batch of Cinnamon-Raisin scones. Before the scones were ready, Robert and Claudia drove up. Everyone dug into the scones and coffee when they were ready. Revived and fueled we launched into our main dishes. Robert started a chuck roast with potatoes and veggies. Homer dove into a Chicken Pot Pie. Randy began working on a King Ranch Chicken Casserole. As we were firing up coals to cook our main dishes Erin pulled up. She quickly set about prepping a Kielbasa and Potato with Cheese dish. As the main dishes were simmering, baking, and broiling, Sylvia whipped up a batch of Cornbread. The smells of deliciousness drifted through the pavilion and made it seem like it would take forever before the food was ready. Then Derry pulled up. Derry is a winter visitor to the Rio Grande Valley and wanted to see what this "Dutch Oven" cooking thing is all about. Thank goodness he came by as it distracted our minds from our growling stomachs. We shared our knowledge with Derry and Phyllis, but it was a two way street. Derry showed us an amazing little potato baker made from a large tin can, some copper wire, and a cork...... go figure? Unfortunately we could not persuade Derry and Phyllis to stay and eat with us. Shortly after their departure the goods were ready and we set the pots on the table. Great planning on all the part of all the cooks resulted in the meal being served right on time. Everyone oohed and aahed, as they perused the vittles that were available. Then after saying Grace the utensils were raised and an eerie silence draped itself across the table. It is always amazing how good food is such a conversation killer. After eating and congratulations all around on behalf of excellent food, we cleaned up and headed out on our seperate ways. As we drove away, I am sure everyone was wondering. When will the next one be? It can't be too soon!
